With a late goal from Tomás Soucek on Thursday, West Ham United defeated Backa Topola 1-0 in Serbia to advance to the second round of the Europa League.

With One minute away from stoppage time, Soucek scored by dodging his defender and volleying a cross into the goal with his right leg outstretched. With just one goal, West Ham was able to finish in the top two of Group A and move on to the next round of the competition.

According to ESPN, the hosts had better chances to end the tie until the very end, but the defences controlled a dull game.

With 12 points, West Ham is atop the standings, tied with German team Freiburg, whom the English team will host in the final round of games on December 14.

Freiburg defeated visiting Olympiakos 5-0 to secure a top-two spot thanks to a hat-trick from Michael Gregoritsch.

To guarantee first place and avoid a playoff match in February against a team that placed third in their Champions League group, West Ham simply needs a point against Freiburg to advance to the round of 16.
