The Lagos State House of Assembly has officially impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa amid serious allegations of financial misappropriation and misconduct.
This decision, reached during a session on January 13, 2025, saw Obasa replaced by his deputy, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, who now becomes the first female Speaker in the history of the Assembly.
The impeachment was prompted by accusations of gross misconduct, including a lack of transparency in financial dealings and poor leadership. Lawmakers cited specific instances of alleged mismanagement, such as the controversial allocation of funds for vehicles and other capital projects that raised significant concerns among critics.
The motion for Obasa's removal was introduced by Femi Saheed, who highlighted multiple infractions that undermined the integrity of the Assembly.
Obasa, who had served as Speaker since 2015, denied the allegations and maintained his innocence. His tenure was marked by various controversies, including claims of authoritarian leadership and intimidation of fellow lawmakers.
Following his impeachment, armed security personnel were deployed around the Assembly to maintain order and prevent any disruptions.
In addition to Obasa's removal, the Assembly also suspended Clerk Olalekan Onafeko and dissolved all existing committees. The new Speaker Meranda expressed her commitment to transparency and accountability in her upcoming plans for the Assembly, although she refrained from making detailed statements immediately after her swearing-in.
