Supreme Court Orders Direct Payment Of Allocation To LGAs

Idongesit Udoewah

The Supreme Court has granted financial autonomy to local governments across the country by separating their allocation payments from their respective state governments.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court ruled in a petition filed by the Federal Government against the 36 state governments that the Federal Government must henceforth pay allocations designated for the 774 local governments directly into their respective accounts.

In its decision, a seven-member panel of justices found that state governments continued to abuse their powers by holding and exploiting cash intended for LGAs.

Details will be provided later.
