The Federal Government has launched an immediate investigation into the jailbreak that occurred at the Koton Karfe Custodial Centre in Kogi State. Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, described the incident as unfortunate and vowed to recapture all fleeing inmates using the service’s biometrics and technology solutions.
The Minister has directed the Acting Comptroller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, to assess the situation at the Kogi facility and begin a comprehensive audit to determine the cause of the incident.
There were reports of a jailbreak at the facility on Monday, during which 12 inmates escaped. During the incident, one officer was killed. The Kogi State Government has pledged to collaborate with security agencies to investigate the jailbreak at the Federal Correctional Centre, citing evidence of internal compromise and collaboration.
So far, three escapees have been rearrested.
