Malam Rufai Hanga has been confirmed by the Supreme Court on Friday as the senator-elect for the Kano Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly on the New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP) platform.

The Independent National Electoral Commission appealed to the court, which was held to lack merit in the ruling written by Justice Uwani Aba-Aji but delivered by Justice Emmanuel Agim, and the suit was therefore dismissed.

The two formulated issues were resolved against one another in the apex court's decision, and it completely rejected its arguments.

The court also disqualified Ibrahim Shekarau, a former governor of Kano State and former minister of education, from running as the NNPP's candidate in the National Assembly poll on February 25.

After Shekarau resigned as a party member and senatorial candidate due to irreconcilable differences with the party's leadership, a Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal in Abuja upheld the nomination of Hanga as the party's senatorial candidate.

However, INEC challenged the decision, which it ultimately did not succeed in doing at the appellate court.

The electoral body then went to the Supreme Court to contest the ruling of the two courts that deemed Hanga to be the party's legitimate senatorial district candidate.
