The Lagos State Police Command has denied allegations that its officers restricted movement or barred journalists from accessing the Lagos State House of Assembly amidst ongoing political tensions.

The Assembly has been embroiled in a leadership crisis following the impeachment of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa by 36 out of 40 lawmakers in January.

In a statement shared on Monday, the Police Command’s spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, clarified that the deployment of additional officers to the Assembly complex was a precautionary measure ordered by Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh. The move, he explained, was aimed at maintaining public order and preventing potential disruptions by miscreants or thugs.

Hundeyin emphasized that there were no restrictions on entry for journalists or individuals with legitimate business at the Assembly. He noted that traffic diversions around the complex were implemented solely to strengthen security measures and ensure control over the area’s security framework.

He stated: "For emphasis, there is no restriction of movement into the Lagos State House of Assembly, and the diversion of traffic was proactively emplaced to forestall breakdown of law and order in the Assembly and its environs."

Meanwhile, tensions remain high as lawmakers prepare for an emergency plenary session on Monday.
