On Tuesday, the Delta House of Assembly granted Governor Sheriff Oborevwori's request to appoint 20 Special Advisers (SAs) to help oversee state administration.
The governor's proposal was approved in response to a motion made by Emeka Nwaobi, the majority leader of the assembly, in the assembly's plenary session, which was presided over by Mr Dennis Guwor, the speaker.
The governor had written to the Assembly asking for their consent to appoint SAs, and the letter was read aloud in the assembly plenary.
According to Oborevwori, the request complied with section 196, subsection 1-3 of the Federal Republic of Nigeria's Constitution as amended.
The governor explained that the Special Advisers will help to direct the administration's development strategy and expressed his gratitude to the House for giving the request early attention.
Additionally, the governor last week forwarded to the Assembly a list of candidates for appointment to the Delta State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, which the Assembly on Tuesday reviewed and approved.
The member from the Aniocha South constituency, Hon. Isaac Anwuzia, seconded the majority leader's motions for screening and confirmation.
The nominees are Justice Celestina Ogisi (Rtd) as Chairman, Prof. Louis Ojogwu, Mr Alexander Neyin, Dr Iris Ibi, Mr Augustine Eseagwu, Mr Festus Onyaeju, and Mrs Uju Rosaline Monye.
The speaker thanked the assembly for the thorough screening and encouraged the nominees to work hard to ensure that justice is served quickly in the state.
According to Oborevwori, the appointment was required since the Advisory Council needed to be reconstituted when the members' terms of office expired.
The appointment, he said, was made by the authority granted to him by Section 3, Subsections 1 and 2, of the 2016 Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy Law.
The former State Head of Service, Dr Samuel Okpokpor, passed away over the weekend, and the speaker expressed his condolences to his family during Tuesday's plenary.
The speaker prayed to God to provide the deceased former Head of Service, Dr. Okpokpor's family the strength to bear their loss and the soul's complete rest.
