The speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa,  has urged residents to behave peacefully during Saturday's governorship and state assembly elections, despite the uproar over APC enforcer Musiliu "MC Oluomo" Akinsanya's threats to stay at home Igbos who will not vote for the party.

On Friday, Mr. Obasa issued a statement in which he appealed to young people to refrain from thuggery, electoral violence, or any other act that could jeopardize peace.

“Our youths should not engage in anything that will disrupt the peace and tranquility of the nation. They should conduct themselves honorably, during and after elections,” the APC legislator said.

Mr Obasa also urged parents and guardians to advise their wards and children not to foment trouble during the election, appealing to Nigerians not to allow their political differences to cause violence or other problems capable of throwing the country into crisis.

The most recent threat made against the Igbo people in Lagos was not discussed by the Lagos speaker, an ally of President-elect Bola Tinubu, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, or MC Oluomo.

We have pleaded with them. It's not a fight if they don't want to vote for us. Tell them, Mama Chukwudi, to sit down at home if you don't want to vote for us. In a video that went viral and was shared on Twitter, MC Oluomo said, "Sit down at home," using slang.

The threat made by MC Oluomo, leader of the Lagos motor park management committee, who is well-known for leading the militant wing of the APC in Lagos, could deter potential voters from exercising their right to vote.

After the shocking loss to the Labour Party in the presidential elections on February 25, APC officials have used a variety of strategies over the past week to prevent opposition parties and their supporters from fully participating in the elections for governor and state assembly on March 18.

Mr. Babajide has worked tirelessly, intensifying his efforts to placate the Igbo community and young people who are upset about how the governor handled the EndSARS Lekki Tollgate massacre.

Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the flagbearer of the Labour Party, has established himself as a significant rival to Mr. Sanwo-Olu of the APC in the upcoming governorship election on Saturday due to the party's unprecedented victory in Lagos.
