This decision is in line with the commission's established practice of conducting such reviews to assess the electoral process.

In a statement signed by Festus Okoye, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, INEC expressed its commitment to learning lessons and charting the way forward based on the experiences of the recently concluded general election.

It is worth noting that the general election took place on February 25, 2023, with Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress declared as the winner by INEC. However, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party and Peter Obi of the Labour Party challenged the results in court.

The upcoming post-election review will involve the participation of INEC officials at both the national and state levels, as well as various stakeholders, which aim to critically assess the electoral process, identify areas for improvement, and determine strategies for enhancing future elections.

Through this review, INEC seeks to strengthen its operations, enhance transparency, and promote credible and inclusive elections in Nigeria.

The statement read in part “The review will commence with a meeting of the Resident Electoral Commissioners on 4th July 2023 and end with the Commission’s retreat on 5th August 2023.

“At the State level, the internal review will involve the Commission’s regular and ad hoc staff, including RECs, the 774 Electoral Officers, Heads of Departments, Administrative Secretaries as well as some Presiding Officers and Collation/Returning Officers.

“The external engagement will involve critical stakeholders such as political parties, security agencies, election observers, the media and service providers such as transporters that facilitated the movement of personnel and materials for the election.
