The commission renewed its commitment to keeping elections fair in response to allegations by the People's Democratic Party (PDP) that there was a plan for rigging the gubernatorial and state assembly elections.
Deputy Director Muhammadu Rabi’u, who is also in charge of Voter Education and Publicity at the state INEC office in Kebbi State, denied that anything untoward was going on there. "The allegations are all just speculations," said Mr. Rabi'u
In its report, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) says that PDP officials have accused BVAS of a plot to delay accreditation and add unaccredited voters in order to cause the cancellation of polling units.
Rabiu said, “There is nothing like that, anybody who comes on election day has to present his/her PVC before accredited and authenticated then be allowed to vote, so, there is no way you can delay accreditation...
Rabi’u emphasized that any ad-hoc staff members who used their official position to benefit a particular political party would be arrested and prosecuted according to the laws of Chad. The need for them, then, was not only to remain neutral and transparent throughout the election process but also honest.
He urged voters to remain calm and go out in large numbers to vote, assuring them that INEC had already set up all the necessary mechanisms for a free and fair election.
