Edo LP Outraged as Obidient Movement Supports APC Candidate

Gbadamosi Azeezah

A group calling itself the Obidient Movement has pledged support for the Edo State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, ahead of the September 21, 2024 election.

The group, comprising members from Edo South Senatorial District, cited Okpebholo's close ties with the people as the reason for their support.

However, the Edo State Labour Party (LP) condemned the move, stating it was absurd for people who call themselves the Obidient Movement to support candidates of other parties. The LP argued that the Obidient Movement is synonymous with the Labour Party and its members are integral to the party.

The Obidient Movement gained prominence during the 2023 presidential election campaign, coordinating and propagating the activities of LP candidate Peter Obi. After the election, the Labour Party created the Obidient Directorate under Julius Abure to cater to the movement's members, but Obi later rebuked the name, stating the Obidient Movement did not belong to any political party.

Okpebholo, receiving the group's support, pledged to surpass the achievements of Governor Godwin Obaseki in his first year if elected. He urged voters to punish the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with their votes.
