The controversial EC's Constitutional Instrument (C.I) decison to make the Ghana card the only acceptable form of identification for voter registration has received the support of the majority in parliament.
The minority and speaker have voiced concerns about the C.I., claiming it will obstruct voters' access to the polls and result in their disenfranchisement.
The NDC Lawmakers have promised to oppose the CI's approval.
But, speaking to the media, majority leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu asserted that the new CI's clauses are valid.
He claims that no one, not even Alban Bagbin, the speaker, can prevent the laying of the constitutional document in parliament.
“I will not say that the Speaker has no business in what business is transacted in parliament, I wouldn’t say that at all, except to say that no speaker has the right to also say that I will not allow government’s business to be transacted. No Speaker has that authority,” the Majority Leaders said.
Nonetheless, the Suame MP pledged to maintain contact with the minority in an effort to reach agreement on the divisive C.I.
” What we’re doing is really trying to build consensus. We’ve been meeting behind the curtains engaging ourselves and all that, we’ll continue to do that and I believe that in the fullness of time sanity will prevail,” he stated.
