Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has been honored as the 2024 Governor of the Year in the Health Sector by the New Telegraph Newspaper.
The announcement was conveyed in a letter signed by Ayodele Aminu, Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of Daily Telegraph Publishing Company Limited, publishers of New Telegraph, Saturday Telegraph, and Sunday Telegraph. The accolade was based on recommendations from the Board of Editors and a panel of judges.
According to a statement from the governor's spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, the letter commended Governor Adeleke's transformative strides in the health sector since taking office.
The letter highlighted key achievements, including:
Rehabilitation of 345 health centres across the 332 wards in Osun State, complete with improved water supply, modern toilets, electricity, and renovations.
Introduction of the Imole Surgical and Medical Outreach, which has conducted three major medical outreaches in each of the state’s senatorial districts over the past year. Over 30,000 patients have benefited from surgeries, including cataract procedures.
Expansion of the Osun Health Insurance Scheme, which has enrolled thousands of residents.
These efforts earned Osun State the prestigious South-West Champion Award in Primary Healthcare (Universal Health Coverage) in December 2024, along with a $500,000 cash prize.
The award ceremony is scheduled to take place later this year, celebrating Governor Adeleke's impactful contributions to the health sector.
