The decision comes in line with a recent US Government ban that restricts the presence and usage of TikTok on information technology networks, including those used by Federal contractors.
Delta Air Lines has extended the ban to include personal devices connected to its internal network systems. This means that employees are no longer allowed to use TikTok on their personal devices for work-related purposes, such as accessing apps, email, intranet, or flight booking systems. It's worth noting that Delta Air Lines maintains an official TikTok account, but the ban specifically applies to employee devices.
Similarly, Southwest Airlines had previously implemented a TikTok ban for the same reasons. As a federal contractor that works with various government agencies and accommodates federal employees on official travel, Southwest Airlines is required to adhere to the government's guidance.
TikTok has been inaccessible on the Southwest network since June 28, 2023. However, the Southwest Social Business and Insights Team will continue to use TikTok outside the airline's network for customer communication.
According to the airline: “As a federal contractor we are required to adhere to this guidance and accordingly, TikTok will be inaccessible via the Southwest network beginning June 28, 2023.
“As the technology and regulatory landscape evolves, we will continue to evaluate our policies and procedures to uphold Southwest’s ongoing commitment to compliance and cybersecurity, safeguarding both our people and data.”
This rule restricts the use of TikTok and other applications developed by ByteDance on devices utilized for official business by government contractors.
The US Government's stance on TikTok usage stems from the "No TikTok on Government Devices Act," issued by the White House in February 2023, which directed agencies to remove TikTok from federal devices and limit its use on devices utilized by specific state governments. It's worth noting that personal phones not used for work-related tasks are exempt from this prohibition.
These airline bans primarily impact devices utilized for official business by government contractors and may not directly affect personal devices not involved in contractual obligations. The aim is to ensure compliance with government guidelines while safeguarding sensitive information and data.
