Investigations have revealed recent footages of the River Ankobra regaining its ecological integrity is a mirage as Chang fan operators still mine directly on the river bed at various sections close to Axim and Prestea-Himan Lower Denkyira, in the Western Region.
It was found that recent green pictures taken by some officials at the Ankobra estuary is a momentary phenomenon of the sea pushing back the river at high tide.
The major water source has turned thick and murky at the Prestea-Himan source point and polluted along the Axim trail to the estuary.
Ghana Environmental Advocacy Group, an NGO, noted that the momentary high tide from the sea leading to a seemingly clearer waters, that became the cover story of a highly polluted River, was an occasional natural phenomenon but not as a result of the cessation of the impunity being meted out to our river bodies, which needs to be rigorously addressed.
