Protest: Anambra NSCDC Deploys 1,190 Personnel, Warns Protesters

Gbadamosi Azeezah

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Anambra State has deployed 1,190 personnel to maintain law and order ahead of the planned nationwide protest scheduled to begin on August 1st, in order to protect critical national assets and infrastructure, as well as prevent any form of violent protest or lawlessness.

Maku Olatunde, the Anambra State Commandant of NSCDC, stated that 350 personnel will be dedicated to the anti sit-at-home order operations on Mondays, while 840 personnel will be tasked with resisting violent protests, preventing vandalism of critical national assets and infrastructure, and ensuring the safety and security of Anambra citizens.

The deployment is in line with a marching order given by the Commandant General, Dr. Ahmed Audi, to the NSCDC to stand firm on its core mandate as the lead agency statutorily responsible for protecting critical national assets and infrastructure.

While acknowledging the rights of citizens to protest, the NSCDC has called on the organisers of the protest to operate within the ambit of the law.

The command has warned that individuals contemplating illegal acts during the protest, such as tampering with government assets or infrastructure, will face severe legal consequences.

Disrupting social and economic activities in the state, particularly at strategic facilities like airports and hospitals, and hindering essential service providers from carrying out their duties, is strictly prohibited.

The NSCDC has assured the public that it remains committed and unrelenting in maintaining law and order before, during, and after the planned protest.
