One of the suspects connected to the murder of Mr. Bako Angbashim has been taken into custody by police officers in Rivers State.

On September 8, Superintendent of Police Angbashim was leading his men to raid criminal hideouts in the Odemude community of the state's Ahoada West Local Government Area when they were ambushed by a dreaded cult group led by Okpara. They opened fire, eventually capturing Angbashim who was beheaded and his body decapitated while they were filming their action.

The State Police Command, led by Commissioner of Police Emeka Nwonyi, has been in search of the perpetrators ever since the incident.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Command's public relations officer, Grace Iringe-Koko, announced the arrest of one of the suspects.

She claimed that before police officers intervened, the culprit was ready to be lynched by the youths.

“The Rivers State Police operatives on Monday, 25/09/2023 at about 19:43hrs acting on actionable information received that in Edoaha Community in Ahoada East, one of the suspects who brutally killed SP Bako Angbashim was about to be lynched to death by an angry mob,” she stated.

“Subsequently, a team of policemen swung into action to rescue the suspect who was about to be burnt with a tyre on his neck. He was rescued and brought to the station where he made a useful statement.

“He was later transferred to SCID for discreet investigation with a view to apprehend the fleeing kingpin, his gang members, and to recover their operational weapons.”

The unnamed suspect is reportedly a member of the gang that brutally killed SP Bako Angbashim, a DPO, earlier this month.

His murder drew widespread criticism, leading the police high command, the federal government, and the government of Rivers State to order an inquiry and the prompt arrest of the culprits.

Siminalayi Fubara, the governor of Rivers State, also set a 100 million naira bounty on the heads of Gift David Okpara Okpolowu's criminal gang.

Days after the suspects were made wanted, a deliberately recorded video of them partying and claiming victory appeared online.

However, the video disclosed and made known the identity of other group members, including the arrested suspect.
