

The Delta State Police Command has released an official statement following the circulation of a viral video on social media allegedly showing a police officer shooting a young man in Effurun, Delta State. The footage has sparked widespread outrage and public concern.
According to its press release, the Command acknowledged the “extra-judicial killing” of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi, noting that the fatal incident occurred on April 26, 2026.
The statement noted officers attached from Area Command Ephron acted on intelligence that the deceased had been arrested while allegedly trying to waybill a parcel containing “a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition.
The Command revealed that “the police officer leading the team, ASP Nuhu Usman, in a move that directly breached both Force Order 237 and the Standard Operating Procedure of the Nigeria Police Force, discharged his firearm, leading to the death of the suspect.”
Meanwhile, the command further disclosed that the officer has been apprehended, queried, and moved to Force Headquarters in Abuja, where he will face the Force Disciplinary Committee for “immediate disciplinary sanction and prosecution".
Reacting to the development, Commissioner of Police Yemi Oyeniyi assured the public that justice would be served. He affirmed that the Command maintains “zero tolerance for lawlessness, recklessness and extrajudicial conduct.”
Oyeniyi also offered his sincere sympathies to the victim’s family and advised residents to remain calm as due process is followed.
