Parliamentary System Best for Nigeria – Aregbesola

Former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has advocated for Nigeria to abandon its presidential system in favour of a parliamentary structure, arguing that it better suits the nation's governance needs.

Speaking at the National Dialogue on Home-Grown Parliamentary System in Abuja, Aregbesola expressed his dissatisfaction with the executive system currently in place, stating that it doesn’t provide adequate checks on power.

“If you go on believing that an individual, no matter how good, could govern 120 million people alone without checks, we are joking,” he said. Aregbesola emphasized that the parliamentary system, with its collective decision-making approach, would advance the interests of Nigeria's large population more effectively.

In February, a group of about 60 lawmakers, led by House Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda, proposed a bill to transition Nigeria’s government structure from presidential to parliamentary. The bill seeks to amend the 1999 Constitution, citing the high cost of maintaining the presidential system amidst declining revenue.

The parliamentary system, which vests executive power in a cabinet accountable to the legislature, is increasingly seen as a viable option for improving governance in Nigeria.
