The Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has reiterated his government’s dedication to removing challenges that restrict persons with disabilities (PWDs) from actively engaging in leadership and governance.

According to a goodwill message in commemoration of the 2024 International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), made available by his special assistant on PWDs, Comrade David Anyaele, Governor Otti emphasised the ongoing efforts to promote inclusivity and improve the well-being of PWDs all over the state.

Otti stressed the importance of the occasion, saying, “Today’s celebration provides another avenue to reflect on efforts toward ensuring the well-being of Abians with disabilities and their participation in the socio-economic development of our state.”

Governor Otti further highlighted his government’s resolve to reduce the incidence of disabilities through investments in education, healthcare, and accessible infrastructure guided by the Abia State Disability Law.

He commended the theme of this year’s IDPD celebration, “Increasing the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future,” as aligning with his government’s manifesto and vision for PWDs.

He detailed ongoing achievements, including the selection of six PWDs to leadership positions. Setting up of an Abia State Disability Commission composed mainly of PWDs. Dedication to integrating PWDs into all aspects of political, social, economic, and cultural life.

“There is nothing about persons with disabilities without persons with disabilities. Therefore, we say no to all forms of discrimination, stigma, and isolation of Abians by reason of disability.”

He promised PWDs their due recognition and full involvement in his government’s developmental agenda.

While wishing all Abians a meaningful celebration of the IDPD, the governor reaffirmed his government’s commitment to creating an environment where PWDs can survive and contribute meaningfully to the state’s progress.
