An inter-ministerial committee for the 2023 National Population and Housing Census was set up by the Osun State Government on Monday.

The committee was officially established in the Exco Lounge of the Governor's Office in Abere by Secretary of the State Government Teslim Igbalaye.

Opeyemi Bello, the press secretary to the SSG, said in a statement that, to ensure the census's success, all relevant agencies will be fully involved in planning and carrying it out.

Igbalaye stated that the committee was formed to ensure that facts and figures about the state are correctly compiled during the upcoming census, noting that the state was underrepresented in the figures published for the 1991 National Population Census.

He emphasized that accurate information regarding a nation's population size, distribution, and characteristics is necessary for describing and evaluating the nation's economic, social, and demographic circumstances as well as for the creation of sound programs and policies aimed at enhancing the welfare of the nation's population.

As a result, he encouraged members of the committee to develop appropriate strategies for sensitization and mobilization regarding the activities of the National Population and Housing Census Exercise and to organize programs for advocacy and sensitization on population and related issues for local government officials, the media, and NGOs.

Mr. Abiodun Ijidele, who is also the secretary of the committee and is the Statistician General for Osun State's Bureau of Statistics, expresses gratitude to the state government for taking proactive measures to ensure that the results of the 2023 census, in contrast to the 1991 census, reflect the actual number of people living in the state.
