The Ondo State House of Assembly has approved a bill to establish 33 new Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) through its third reading in the plenary session.
Upon becoming law, these newly formed LCDAs will coexist alongside the existing 18 local government areas within the state.
The assembly's objective is to enhance governance, ensure efficient service delivery, and promote grassroots development across the state.
Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu initiated the bill, submitting it to the house for approval.
To ensure comprehensive public participation and gather diverse perspectives, the bill underwent a public hearing during which concerned communities submitted their opinions.
Subsequently, the bill was referred to the Committee of the Whole House for further examination.
During the plenary, Deputy Speaker Abayomi Akinruntan presented the committee's report, highlighting the importance of considering cultural homogeneity when demarcating boundaries for the new LCDAs.
He emphasized that this approach would foster unity and inclusivity among various communities within the state.
Akinruntan noted that the state Surveyor General’s office would play a crucial role in the boundary demarcation process to ensure alignment with existing geographical and cultural factors, preventing conflicts and promoting harmonious coexistence.
The Majority Leader of the House, Ogunmolasuyi Oluwole, motioned for the bill's passage into law, seconded by Ogunlana Christopher.
In his ruling, Speaker Oladiji Olamide praised the governor for creating the new LCDAs and expressed optimism that the House's observations and recommendations would be appropriately implemented.
He urged the people of Ondo State to maintain hope and avoid actions that could disrupt the prevailing peace.
He stated, “I appeal to the good people of Ondo State to remain hopeful, as the current position of the House is not an endpoint but a means toward a positive outcome.”
With the bill's approval, the total number of councils in the state now stands at 51.
