The rift between the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Labour Party has intensified as the NLC instructed its state councils and political commission to picket Labour Party secretariats nationwide.

The directive, issued after a virtual meeting on March 19, 2024, cited the Labour Party's National Chairman's refusal to convene a national convention, financial mismanagement, and disregard for NLC leadership.

The NLC accused the LP leadership of planning an unauthorized convention and demanded the chairman's resignation.

In response to the directive, the Labour Party rejected it, alleging personal motives on the part of NLC President Joe Ajaero. They called on Ajaero to resign from the NLC to pursue LP chairmanship ambitions if he wished, and went on to announce plans for an all-inclusive national convention.
