The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has initiated a monitoring operation in response to an oil spill at the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) loading terminal, SMI, in Bonny, Rivers State.
The incident, attributed to a ruptured pipeline, prompted SPDC to promptly shut down the affected section to mitigate further leakage.
In an effort to contain the spill, SPDC has deployed containment booms aimed at preventing the spread of oil and protecting nearby communities from potential environmental hazards.
However, despite these measures, reports indicate that the spill has reached the shoreline, raising alarms about its potential impact on local ecosystems and livelihoods.
NIMASA has activated its emergency operations centre to closely monitor the situation and coordinate a comprehensive response. The agency is collaborating with SPDC and other stakeholders to assess the extent of the spill and determine appropriate remedial actions.
NIMASA has reassured the public of its commitment to minimizing both environmental and social consequences arising from this incident.
