His Royal Majesty, Igwe Ikechukwu Asadu, Chairman of the Enugu State Traditional Rulers’ Council, has asked the Federal Government to release the proscribed leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, stating that his continued detention is contributing to insecurity in the Southeast.
The monarch called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to seek a political solution to the IPOB leaders release, expressing hope that his freedom would help stabilise the region.
Commenting during the 2024 New Yam Festival at Edem Ani Ogwugwu Ancient Kingdom in Nsukka, the king stressed the festival’s importance as a time for thanksgiving for bountiful harvests, peace, and security.
Igwe Asadu, who previously served as Chairman of the South East Traditional Rulers’ Council, appreciated the Enugu State Governor, Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, for his support, including the provision of fertilisers for local farmers and establishing a smart school in the community.
“Iwa Ji is a crucial traditional practice that preserves our culture and reminds us of the importance of agriculture, especially yam farming, as a primary food source and a symbol of wealth,” he said, motivating the people to invest in farming.
Patrick Uburu, Enugu Commissioner for Agriculture, also conveyed the government’s support for the New Yam Festival, stressing its role in promoting cultural heritage and boosting agricultural productivity. The state government, he noted, has identified and continued to support genuine farmers to ensure food security.
The event's chairperson, Chief Chidi Ezema, stressed that the festival celebrates life, culture, and community achievements. He confirmed that this year marks the second anniversary of the festival's revival under the leadership of Igwe Asadu.
Similarly, Ozo Chukwuemeka Ejum, Planning Committee Chairman, commended Igwe Asadu’s commitment to preserving Edem Ani Ogwugwu’s culture and traditions.
The event featured elaborate cultural displays, including masquerades, traditional yam barns, and other performances, celebrating the vibrant Igbo heritage.
