In a significant stride toward bolstering its maritime defense capabilities, the Nigerian Navy welcomed the launch of its second Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) on Sunday, marking a milestone in its ongoing modernization efforts.

The OPV, constructed by Dearsan Shipyard in Turkey, is part of a procurement initiative announced by the Nigerian Navy in August 2021, following approval from former President Muhammadu Buhari. The contract between Dearsan Shipyard and the Nigerian Navy was formalized on November 3, 2021.

Construction of the vessel, designated as P 203, commenced on September 16, 2022, with the first vessel of its kind, measuring 76 meters in length, launched on October 26, 2023. The OPV 76 vessel boasts a modular design, enhancing its versatility for a wide spectrum of maritime operations, ranging from peacetime patrols to emergency interventions.

The addition of these vessels to the Nigerian Navy's fleet signifies a significant enhancement in its operational capabilities. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology and weaponry, the OPVs are poised to undertake various missions, including maritime interdiction, surveillance, special forces operations, naval fire support, search and rescue efforts, anti-piracy patrols, anti-smuggling operations, counter-drug trafficking missions, and disaster relief operations.
