Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, revealed this reopening during a press briefing in Lagos on Monday. He emphasized the significance of stringent compliance measures in protecting public health and preventing future health crises.

Gbadegesin stated that the decision to reopen the markets came after they had fully complied with the necessary conditions. He noted that extensive renovations and compliance measures, including strict conditions and mandatory undertakings for reopening, had been implemented.

"These conditions include providing a designated waste point, installation of block work fence and platforms for the placement of double dino bins, procurement of double dino bins for waste containerization, commitment to putting in place sustainable market waste policing to guarantee constant cleanliness of the market environment, enforcing proper waste disposal regulations, engagement of bin keepers, collaboration with accredited PSP operators for timely evacuation, prompt payment of waste bills, as well as dislodging street traders from road medians and setbacks and preventing unauthorized vending," Gbadegesin explained.

Gbadegesin stressed the importance of cleanliness in markets, as filthy conditions can lead to the spread of diseases such as cholera, typhoid, Lassa fever, Ebola, malaria, and others. He warned that any future violations of sanitation regulations would result in stricter penalties, including the permanent closure of offending markets.

Gbadegesin called on market executive members to fulfill their responsibilities and urged traders to maintain cleanliness in their activities for the benefit of all. He noted that local government authorities would monitor market operations to ensure compliance with the set conditions. He encouraged the public to report any sanitation lapses promptly to LAWMA.
