A commercial motorcycle riders, known as Okada riders on Wednesday attacked and allegedly killed a police officer at the Cele Bus Stop in Lagos, along the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway.
Three rifles that had been taken from police officers were also taken by the furious motorcyclists.
The Okada operators, estimated at 100, fled toward the expressway's Mile 2 side shortly after the officer's death, according to the Guardian.
The riders were said to be armed with cutlasses, daggers, large sticks, and other weapons.
At the scene of the incident, a petty trader said that the fight was retaliation.
She said that the police had killed a commercial motorcyclist in the area a few days earlier, prompting the owners to retaliate.
The merchant emphasized that a policewoman had previously escaped a lynching prior to the incident.
She claims that the motorcycle riders were chased by police to the Ijesha Bus Stop before they were defeated and one of them was killed, and two rifles were taken away from them during the brawl.
She added that after security personnel fired several tear gas canisters, there was calm.
When contacted, Benjamin Hundeyin, the Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the Lagos State Police, acknowledged that an officer had been killed in the incident but declined to comment on the rifles.
He said: “While enforcing the existing ban on the use of motorcycles in parts of Lagos State, police officers of Isolo Division came under attack from motorcycle operators at Cele bus-stop, resulting in the death of one Police Inspector and serious injury to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO).
“Two suspects have been arrested while 41 motorcycles were impounded. The Lagos State Police Command will not be deterred from carrying out its mandate of enforcing duly established laws.
“Citizens are urged to remain law-abiding, as riders and passengers alike arrested on prohibited routes will face the law.
