Kano DisCo Launches Free Installation of 4,000 Prepaid Meters

Gbadamosi Azeezah

The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has announced the launch of an initiative to install over 4,000 prepaid meters for its Band A and Band B customers.

This effort is part of the Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF) program introduced by the Federal Government, aimed at addressing the significant metering gap in Nigeria.

In a statement released on Friday, KEDCO management detailed that the installation will be carried out by approved Meter Asset Providers (MAPs).

"In continuous efforts to close the metering gap, KEDCO has commenced metering its Band A and B customers under the Meter Acquisition Fund initiative," the company said.

The MAF, overseen by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), is designed to facilitate the rapid deployment of meters as part of a broader strategy to improve service delivery and ensure cost recovery.

Meters provided under this initiative will be offered free of charge to eligible customers, with KEDCO responsible for determining who benefits from the program.

Nigeria currently faces a metering deficit of approximately seven million meters, which contributes to reliance on estimated billing practices.
