Govt Officials and Contractors Must Fly Nigerian Airlines - Keyamo

Gbadamosi Azeezah

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has committed to ensuring the passage of the Fly Nigeria Act during his tenure.

Speaking at a recent stakeholder engagement in Abuja, Keyamo expressed disappointment that the law, which mandates the use of Nigerian flag carriers for all government-funded air travel, has been stalled for over 15 years since its initial proposal.

Keyamo emphasized the need for this Act to create a level playing field for local airlines and to combat what he described as a "global conspiracy" that undermines the growth of African aviation.

He noted that foreign airlines dominate the market without fair competition from indigenous carriers, which hampers the development of Nigeria's aviation sector.

During the event, Keyamo stated, “This has been on the cards for some time... Under my tenure, it will happen.” He highlighted that the Act is crucial not only for supporting local airlines but also for enhancing job creation and attracting investments in the industry.

Keyamo's remarks were echoed by industry leaders such as Allen Onyema, Vice President of the Airline Operators of Nigeria and CEO of Air Peace, who hailed the initiative as a transformative step for Nigeria’s aviation landscape.

The minister reiterated his commitment to reviving stalled legislative proposals that could bolster the local industry and ensure that government travel prioritizes Nigerian carriers.

He further criticized the current state of affairs where foreign airlines benefit significantly from Nigerian markets while local operators struggle. Keyamo's advocacy for the Fly Nigeria Act reflects a broader strategy to empower indigenous airlines and foster a competitive aviation environment in Nigeria.
