Ghana Needs To Build Earthquake Resistant Structures

Preparing for future earthquake phenomenon in Ghana.

Acting Director-General of the Ghana Geological Survey Authority (GGSA), Mr Isaac Kuuwan Mwimbelle, has advised Government to encourage the building of earthquake-resistant structures and urged City Authorities to halt all activities in high-risk earthquake zones, adding that some parts of Ghana, lies along the earthquake prone belt.

Adding her voice to the call, Professor Mrs Paulina Amponsah of the School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences, Ghana Atomic Energy Commission, said the recent earthquakes in Turkey and Syria should serve as a wake-up call to Ghana.

She emphasized that Ghana needs to build resistant structures to enhance preparedness for future occurrence of the unfortunate natural phenomenon.

Concluding, he said "earthquakes will definitely happen one day, as such we need to rely on technology to prepare.
