The first lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has urged political office holders in Nigeria to walk the talk on gender equity.
According to her, to fully achieve this across board, we must be seen to walk the talk.
She noted that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has made an important effort to reduce financial problems for women in politics. By providing free nomination forms for grassroots elections, the APC aims to empower capable and qualified women to participate without being hindered by high costs.
The first lady commended the House of Representatives for initiating and passing for second reading the bill seeking 70 out of the 360 legislative seats for women.
Mrs. Tinubu affirmed that after years of advocacy without desired results, lawfully backed implementation may be put in place by altering the stories. She said, ”While quotas and education are important, implementation of these measures is equally necessary.
It is imperative that governments create rigorous procedures to enforce gender quotas.
This includes establishing laws and monitoring systems to make political parties responsible.
Changes to the constitution might be required to enshrine equal gender representation in politics.
These amendments would establish a strong legal basis for achieving adequate women’s representation, transforming gender equality from a policy goal into a fundamental constitutional right.
We can attain the goal of 30% female representation in parliament by decisively initiating the process of building a sustainable democracy characterised by high-quality representation.
