FG Issues Five-Day Massive Flooding Alert for 22 States

The Federal Government has predicted that 94 towns across 22 states are at risk of a five-day flooding event from Tuesday, July 16 to Saturday, July 20, 2024.

Minister of State for Environment, Dr. Iziaq Salako, disclosed this information on Tuesday. He stated that the identified locations and their surrounding areas are expected to experience heavy rainfall that may lead to significant flooding during the prediction period.

The states at risk include Adamawa, Abia, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Borno, Cross River, Nasarawa, the Federal Capital Territory, Jigawa, Kano, Kebbi, Katsina, Kwara, Niger, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe, and Zamfara.

Salako urged stakeholders to take mitigation measures to prevent losses. Regarding the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon, he stated that the Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation manages dams and would be informed of any plans to open the floodgates.

Meanwhile, some state governments, such as Sokoto and Bayelsa, have disclosed their preparedness to address the potential flooding, including evacuation plans and awareness campaigns.
