In a statement signed by FEMA’s Head of Public Affairs, Nkechi Isa, on Wednesday, the agency said it was issuing the warning following an impact-based weather forecast by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency.

According to FEMA's Head of Public Affairs, Nkechi Isa, the states adjacent to the FCT, including Nasarawa, Niger, and Kaduna, should anticipate very strong winds. Additionally, Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Bauchi, Yobe, Gombe, Borno, and Adamawa states will also experience strong winds, with a moderate risk of related hazards, as outlined in the statement.

The agency emphasized that the strong winds may lead to the displacement of individuals and isolated instances of damage to vulnerable structures.

Recognizing the potential impact of climate changes in some states, particularly Nasarawa, on the Federal Capital Territory, FEMA is closely monitoring the situation.

Dr. Abbas Idriss, the Director General of FEMA, informed the public that Search and Rescue teams are on high alert. He urged residents to exercise caution during heavy rains and advised against driving through waterlogged areas.

Furthermore, he appealed for the clearance of blocked drains and avoidance of construction in water channels. Dr. Idriss reassured the public of FEMA's commitment to safeguarding lives and property, while also urging the use of the toll-free emergency number, 112, if the need arises.
