In Port Harcourt, Rivers State, a state high court convicted two former Special Anti-Robbery Squad personnel responsible for extrajudicial killings and sentenced them to death. During the court session, the judge, M.O. Opara, said that the two defendants, Magus Awuri and Shedrick Obibo, would face death by hanging. The judgment's delivery date was however not specified.
The convicted men including an Assistant Superintendent, Samuel Chigbu, Olisa Emeka, and Ogoligo were among the five members of the SARS team who were being tried for killing Mr. Michael Akor and Mr. Michael Igwe while in their custody.
The men who were killed in 2015 were alleged to have stolen recharge cards at Oyigbo, Oyigbo Local Government Area, in Rivers State.
However, while they were being incarcerated at the Nigerian Correctional Center in Port Harcourt, Messrs. Chigbu and Ogoli, two of the police officers, passed on while the three other defendants were still being tried.
Messrs. Ibibo and Awuri were found guilty of conspiracy to commit murder by Judge Opara, who also found Mr. Emeka not guilty.
Speaking to members of the press following the verdict, the prosecution's counsel stated that Mr. Emeka was exonerated because they (the prosecution) were unable to establish their case against him, but noted that justice had been delivered for the deceased person's family.
The prosecution attorney stated that the incident will hopefully serve as a deterrence to other police officers and offer some form of closure to the families of the deceased person.
The mother of one of the murdered guys, Katherine Akoro, was thrilled by the verdict. She said the policemen would eventually have a taste of their own medicine.
She disclosed that in 2011, her son was killed, and their property was carted away, but her son advised her to forgive them and to let them go and return the items they took.
