Eight Pupils Perish in Volta Lake Boat Disaster

Eight among 20 pupils travelling on a boat from Atikagome to Wayokope in the Bono East Region have been killed after the boat capsized.

According to reports from the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) the eight; five boys and three girls aged five to 12 were among 20 pupils who were on their way to school when the tragic incident occured in the middle of their journey. The Sene East Director of NADMO, Ibrahim Wudonyim said the information about the tragedy came to them late.

Mr Wudonyim also indicated that the incident happened in a small fishing community where the only school in the area is located.

The Marine Police Unit of the Ghana Police Service, assisted by some locals, have recovered the bodies of the deceased. Investigations are underway to ascertain the cause of the accident.
