The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Anambra State has officially denied claims that Joshua Chukwubueze Ikechukwu, the individual accused of killing an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) officer in Awka, is a licensed medical doctor.

In a statement released by the association's State Secretary, Dr. Obiaeli Ifeanyi, it was clarified that Ikechukwu is neither a member of the NMA nor recognized as a medical professional.

This clarification comes in response to widespread media reports that inaccurately labeled Ikechukwu as a doctor. The NMA expressed its concern over the misuse of the title "medical doctor" by individuals who are not qualified, emphasizing that such misrepresentations damage the integrity of the medical profession.

The incident reportedly took place in the early hours of Friday, January 17, 2025. Initial reports suggested that Ikechukwu was involved in medical supplies and was affiliated with Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH).

However, following an investigation by the NMA, it was confirmed that he is not associated with NAUTH and has not been identified by any members of the association.

The NMA urged media outlets to exercise caution and conduct thorough investigations before publishing claims regarding individuals' professional identities.

They called for an immediate retraction of any defamatory statements referring to Ikechukwu as a medical doctor. The association also extended its condolences to the EFCC and the family of the deceased officer.
