Individuals believed to be employees of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission conducted a surprise operation on Wednesday, at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State, in the middle of the night.
It was reported that they entered students' lodges at around 2am. Several students have taken to social media to share videos and claim that the individuals forcefully entered their rooms and arrested some of their peers.
Social media posts show evidence of damaged window frames, possibly from an attempt at unauthorized entry.
One social media user named J Brandy expressed frustration by stating, "I thought they were not allowed to raid at night anymore. This hostel (Celebrity Lodge, FUTA) is right next to mine. When will this end? EFCC (officials) acting like thieves in the night!"
In November, the Chairman of the EFCC, Ola Olukoyede, issued an order to stop conducting sting operations at night. This decision came after the arrest of suspected internet fraudsters in Ile-Ife, Osun State by EFCC operatives, which caused widespread outrage.
When the agency's Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, was contacted regarding the matter on Wednesday, he requested a call back in 20 minutes. However, as of the time of this publication, he had not returned any calls.
