The Edo State Vehicle Recovery Committee has successfully retrieved 30 government-owned vehicles from officials of the previous administration, Chairman Kelly Okungbowa announced on Thursday.
This announcement was made in a statement by Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo. Okungbowa praised whistleblowers for their crucial role in facilitating the recoveries, which included four vehicles taken from the residence of a former high-ranking official and another from a private individual.
“We have recovered two Land Cruiser Jeeps and two Toyota Hilux vehicles from a former high-ranking official of the immediate past government. One of the vehicles contained campaign posters and umbrellas,” Okungbowa reported.
He assured Edo residents that the committee is committed to making additional recoveries before the two-week deadline set for completing its mandate.
“We appeal to the public for more information to aid our operations. Whistleblowers have been instrumental to our success, and we are committed to rewarding anyone who provides helpful tips,” he added.
Okungbowa emphasized that the committee is prepared to travel nationwide to locate state-owned vehicles wherever they are found.
It is worth noting that last Friday, the committee recovered three vehicles, including one Hilux van and two Toyota Hiace buses. One of these buses was found to contain bags of rice intended for distribution as palliatives to Edo residents.
The chairman reiterated the committee's determination to ensure all government assets are accounted for and returned to the state, stating, “We are confident that we will recover all stolen vehicles.”
