The Edo State Government has officially lifted the suspension on its state security outfit, now renamed the Edo State Security Corps.
This decision, announced on Friday, comes after the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, suspended the previous security network in September 2024 ahead of the gubernatorial election.
In a statement released by Chief Press Secretary Fred Itua, Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo emphasized that this move represents a significant shift in the state's approach to enhancing safety and security.
The initial suspension was based on constitutional provisions that assign election security solely to the Nigeria Police Force, supported by other agencies within the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES).
Following the successful conduct of the gubernatorial election, the Edo State Government deemed it necessary to reinstate the security outfit to strengthen its security framework and ensure public safety.
As part of the reinstatement process, all returning officers are instructed to report to either the office of the State Corps Commander or their respective zonal offices (North, Central, South) to facilitate a smooth transition and effective deployment of the Security Corps.
