The Department of State Services has addressed concerns regarding the access granted to the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, emphasizing that he has never been denied access to his legal team, medical professionals, or his family members.

This statement follows a court order from the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama, which directed the DSS to allow Emefiele access to his lawyers and relatives.

Emefiele was arrested on June 10 after President Bola Tinubu suspended him, citing the need for financial sector reforms and an investigation into his office.

In a statement released on Saturday by the DSS spokesperson, Peter Afunanya, it was clarified that the DSS had fully adhered to its Standard Operating Procedures in handling Emefiele's case.

The statement highlighted, "It is important to note that the DSS has granted access to Emefiele's family, medical professionals, and other appropriate individuals from the day he was taken into custody, even before the court order was issued."

The DSS stressed its commitment to transparent and professional conduct, adhering to the rule of law in alignment with democratic governance. They stated that their operational procedures regarding the handling and investigation of suspects were diligently followed.

Furthermore, Afunanya disclosed that the DSS had uncovered plans by certain individuals and groups to launch campaigns against the DSS and the Federal Government in response to Emefiele's suspension and the ongoing investigation.

The DSS remains resolute in their duty to ensure national security and uphold the principles of justice and transparency throughout their operations.

The statement added,  “The DSS has identified persons and groups planning to stage campaigns of calumny against it and the government over the suspension and investigation of Mr Godwin Emefiele.

“Such groups intend to gather at different points in Abuja and Lagos in the coming week with placards depicting the service and government in a bad light as well as calling for the immediate release of Emefiele.

“The service is, therefore, aware of cheap propaganda aimed at de-motivating and distracting it from professionally executing the onerous responsibilities assigned to it.”
