The Delta State Police Command has defended its officers' actions following a viral video showing an extensive search of passengers' belongings at a checkpoint during a road trip from Benin to Owerri.
The video, shared by a female passenger, captured officers inspecting boxes, luggage, and sealed waybill packages belonging to travelers, including women and children. The search reportedly caused a delay of about an hour.
Reacting to public concerns about the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, stated via a post on X that the officers acted within their rights during the stop-and-search operation.
He emphasized that such measures are critical for maintaining security and preventing the transportation of dangerous items. Edafe questioned whether similar criticism would arise if weapons had been discovered during the search.
He clarified that while male officers are prohibited from physically searching women, they are authorized to inspect their belongings. “The police were right and can search all items, including waybills, during the course of stop-and-search duty. And yes, they can search the belongings of a woman. They are only not allowed to search a woman physically if they are male officers, but not their properties,” he explained.
