The Nigeria Data Protection Bill, 2023 obtained President Bola Tinubu's assent as law.

A legal foundation for the defense of personal data and the practice of data protection in Nigeria is provided by the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023.

This was said by Dr. Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner of the Nigerian Data Protection Bureau (NDPB), at the validation workshop for the NDPD Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP) in Abuja.

On Tuesday, April 4, 2023, former President Muhammadu Buhari forwarded the measure to the Senate and House of Representatives for review and approval.

“Now an Act, the new law establishes the Nigeria Data Protection Commission and replaces the NDPB established by former President Buhari in February 2022.”

A National Commissioner will serve as the organization's head, and their job will be to oversee the handling of personal data.
