Consumers are not getting value for money

The consumer right must be protected; the consumer is left helpless in instance of goods that are not returnable and monies not refundable, what is the benefit of the consumer in such circumstance.

Laying this argument before court, Mr. Samuel Abu Jinapor said he will be signing a Consumer Protection bill to the Cabinet for their approval and consideration. He says the consumers need to be protected. These laws should be enshrined to take effect.

“Currently our legal and Regulatory framework for the protection of Consumer Right has been fragmented in different pieces of legislation. In those areas that seem regulated, there are instances of jurisdictional complaints among the various regulators leaving the consumer with no remedy. In short, Consumers are not getting value for money. It is not uncommon in our country Mr. Speaker to enter shops and see signs “Goods sold are not returnable”, what protection does the man who buys clothes from these shops which do not fit in gets or what  remedy is given to  the woman who buy a phone charger and gets home only to notice it does not work. The need for such legal framework has long been recognized and as a respected member of the international community we are enjoying by the United Nations Conference on trade in development to institute a Functional Consumer Protection regime to protect consumers as well as enshrining their rights in the marketplace.  It is to fulfill these obligations that government under the able and distinguished leadership of the President of the Republic, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwah Akuffo is working rigorously to ensure the passage of the Consumer Protection Law. I am happy to announce Mr. Speaker that in the coming days I will be signing a Consumer Protection bill which will be laid before cabinet for its consideration and possible approval and subsequently for the consideration of this August house.”

Some Members of Parliament spoke;

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa says

“Consumers can suffer injuries that can be permanent and even that they may be lucky there have been instances where people have died and the remedies that have been available for their loved ones, their relations have been virtually nonexistent this is positive and I believe that all of us stand in readiness to support this initiative”

Samuel Atta kyea MP, Abuakwa South added;

“The appetite for profit sometimes looms so large that the people who should have the benefit of products and services are always at the end of the joke and it’s about time you deal with, how the local airlines in the realms are giving travelers a shabby treatment like you can go to Kotoka International airport and you will be marking time for four good hours.”

“There was UN cry about some kind of drugs imported into this country. We were worried about the kind of drugs we were told that the drugs were fake but eventually nothing was said about it, it got absorbed into the system I'm very sure people may have lost lives because of that. So consumer protection is critical” another member of the house added.
