The Obong of Calabar, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu, V, has urged the Federal Government to complete the Adiabo bridge, which was started by the late General Sani Abacha's regime in 1993.

He made the request through the Obong of Calabar Executive Forum, OCEF, an executive and advisory body in the Palace of the Obong headed by High Chief Henshaw.

According to him, the bridge was built to open up the hinterlands and connect Akwa Ibom State, reducing journey times and improving economic fortunes for communities.

The Calabar (Adiabo) side of the bridge was about 70% completed, according to Obong Abasi Otu, when it was put on hold by that administration for unclear reasons.

He emphasised that such a significant investment should not be allowed to waste away since it is still relevant.

“We want to strongly appeal to the federal government not to forget this bridge. It is very important because it can open up many communities up to neighbouring Akwa Ibom State” the monarch stated.

While applauding President Bola Tinubu for starting the coastal Calabar-Lagos highway, the Obong brought up the long-standing issue of dredging the Calabar Channel.

He said that dredging it would greatly increase both economic and maritime trade.
