Army Court-Martials Major General $1,476,200 Theft

Major General Umar Muazu Mohammed was found guilty of 14 of 18 counts against him in the Special Court Martial that the Nigerian Army set up to try one of its officers for violating multiple service laws.

Mohammed, who formerly served as Nigerian Army Properties Limited's Group Managing Director and Executive Vice Chairman, was accused of theft, forgery, conspiracy, theft, and unauthorized diversion of Army property, among other offenses. All of these charges are subject to service discipline.

The collection of a whopping $1.045,400 paid by shipping companies for the use of the Nigerian Army Jetty located at No. 6 Marina, Victoria Island, Lagos, was one of the charges brought before the Special Court Martial, which was held in the Army Headquarters Command officers mess.

Major Gen Mohammed was also found guilty of removing and seizing N74 million from the N75 million that was paid for a property owned by the Nigerian Army in Ikoyi, Lagos.

However, he was cleared of charges related to selling Army property in Lagos for N200 million and diverting N750 million from the N2.5 billion secured from banks and subscribers' contributions for an Army housing development in Asokoro, Abuja.

He was also cleared of charges related to forging a Deed of Agreement document in order to confiscate another Army property in Lagos.

The Special Court Martial, which is presided over by Major General Kames Myam and is comprised of seven other Major Generals, a Brigadier General, as a Judge Advocate, is scheduled to read out the penalties handed down to the accused on Tuesday , the next week.

Major General UM Mohammed was taken into the courtroom in a wheelchair, despite the fact that the court's president, Major General Myan, said that the accused had undergone all requisite medical examinations and that they had shown he was healthy enough to stand trial.
