The Lagos Government has started offering group sessions for assistance and healing to those who commit domestic violence through its Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, or DSVA.
Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, the DSVA's executive secretary, said the program's launch was in accordance with Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu's dedication and resolution to offer a comprehensive response to Sexual and Gender-Based Violence in the state.
According to Vivour-Adeniyi, the alarming rise in domestic violence incidents has made it necessary to confront the problem.
She stated that the program would address the underlying causes of domestic violence and further stated that the healing group sessions would aid in identifying and addressing the underlying issues influencing the violent conduct of the perpetrator.
Research findings, she continued, have demonstrated that the root causes of domestic violence instances include unresolved trauma, concerns with anger management, drug abuse, or ingrained habits of violence.
Without psychiatric help, according to Vivour-Adeniyi, there is a danger that they could continue the cycle of violence in their own relationships or pass it on to younger generations.
She pointed out that by strategically intervening, offenders can learn more about these issues, come up with better coping mechanisms, and end the cycle of violence that the support and healing group sessions can help with.
She also revealed that such structured intervention sessions will help offenders develop new coping strategies, conflict-resolution techniques, and positive relationship dynamics.
