In a statement released on Friday, the UN refugees agency also emphasized the global necessity for secure and legal avenues for individuals forcibly displaced from their homes.

UNHCR called upon other nations to intensify their efforts, acknowledging the significant progress made by the United States in extending life-saving resettlement solutions to more vulnerable refugees.

"This represents more than a twofold increase in resettlement numbers for this fiscal year compared to the previous one," the statement noted.

The agency pledged ongoing support for the U.S. government, civil society organizations, and refugees to ensure the success of the program in the upcoming year.

Matthew Reynolds, UNHCR Representative to the U.S. and the Caribbean, stated, "This remarkable display of compassion and leadership will offer many displaced individuals a hopeful opportunity and a secure and dignified place to rebuild their lives."

He added, "In simple terms, it will save and transform many lives."

The News Agency of Nigeria (MAN) reported that UNHCR estimates that there are currently over two million refugees worldwide in need of resettlement.

In 2022, UNHCR offices across the globe referred refugees for resettlement to 25 countries that have demonstrated solidarity with nations hosting refugees and asylum-seekers by providing this invaluable solution. UNHCR coordinates global resettlement efforts to ensure their prompt and efficient processing.

"While the world continues to grapple with the repercussions of conflict and violence, we must expand solutions for displaced individuals," the agency stated. "These solutions include resettlement and other legal avenues such as humanitarian admission, family reunification, community sponsorship, as well as skill-based education and employment opportunities."

The UNHCR commended the U.S. Welcome Corps, a private refugee sponsorship program initiated in January 2023, as an important and innovative contribution. It plays a crucial role in granting more refugees access to education and reuniting families.

The UNHCR pointed out that seventy-six percent of the world's refugees are hosted in low- and middle-income countries and urged more nations to step forward and offer resettlement slots and other admission pathways for those residing in countries of asylum.
