The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has imposed a no-flight zone over the Niger Republic as an immediate response to the military coup.

The ECOWAS made the announcement today during an emergency meeting in response to the mounting tension caused by the military actors attempting to take over power in Niger.

This massive action, which includes closing the air and land borders, is considered as a necessary response to the junta's recent ascent, which has caused significant upheaval in the nation and threatens regional political stability.

The ECOWAS leadership is certain that imposing a no-flight zone will help limit the junta's power and prevent any possible collaborators from giving aerial support, despite the fact that the coup leaders are concerned that the regional organization may soon undertake a military operation in the capital of the Sahel country.

A week has been given to the junta to surrender power, and in addition to the no-fly zone, the regional body has approved urgent financial sanctions over the coup. It has also noted that the use of force has not been ruled out.

In an effort to restore peace and security in the nation, ECOWAS also insisted that President Mohamed Bazoum continue to be recognized as the leader of Niger. They also urged their member nations and the rest of the world to support and respect this decision.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who also serves as Chairman of ECOWAS, spoke during the emergency meeting he presided over today and condemned the military coup in the Niger Republic, adding that Africa has come of age.

Tinubu expressed the displeasure of ECOWAS at the coup d'état in the Niger Republic to the regional leaders.

“Africa has come of age, we reject coup and interruption to constitutional order,” the Nigerian leader said amid applause.

“As African leaders, it is our sheer responsibility to foster stability and progress, placing the wellbeing of our people at the forefront of our endeavours.

“Working together towards their prosperity and happiness must always constantly be our goal and consistently, we will stand with our people in freedom and our commitment to the rule of law and not the barrel of gun.”
