Oyo State Congressman Akeem Agbaje, of the APC party, gave a commendation at yesterday's World Red Cross Day celebration in Ibadan. The event marked 160 years since the organization was founded.

Agbaje, a legal practitioner and former governorship aspirant on the platform of APC, said that since its establishment in 1960 humanitarian efforts by the society had complemented those of Federal Government in areas such as disaster management.

He praised the Nigerian Red Cross Society for contributing to improving health conditions and preventing diseases, saying that its emergency relief services had helped many Nigerians.

“This is in line with its mission of alleviating the situation of the vulnerable, including those affected by disaster, epidemics, armed conflicts and the poorest communities in both urban and rural areas amongst whom are women, children, the aged and the displaced.”

“The resolve of the Nigerian Red Cross Society to be a partner in progress to the Nigerian government is indeed commendable.”

“It is on record that the organisation worked tirelessly in creating awareness on the causes, symptoms and prevention of COVID-19 cases across Nigeria when the pandemic broke out in the country in 2020,” he said.

The APC chieftain, who chaired the ceremony, noted that during times of emergency and disaster, his society did its part to help struggling communities in other parts of West Africa.

He said that the enormous responsibilities undertaken by the organization require support from all quarters.

Therefore, Agbaje appealed to kind-hearted individuals and corporate bodies to assist the society in whatever form so that it could continue improving its services for Nigerians.
